Filming outside is inevitably an obstacle. Sunlight can cause issues with shadows, exposure, and shaping. I was aware of this entering my production. However, I know lighting is a crucial aspect to have an appealing film. To obtain the best natural lighting, I have to film at an extremely specific time. Planning around the sun's position is a process that can be unreliable and difficult. Filming right before sunset or right after sunrise are two of the best times. Here are some other tips I learned.
- Direct light= No dimension
- Position actor to make the most of natural light
- Mirrors to redirect sunlight
- Sun behind actor= less contrast on face
- Do not overexpose bright areas
- Shaded areas
The video below taught me numerous tips and ideas to achieve the best lighting outdoors.
